The IELTS technology essay question
Here is an exam-style question:
Some people believe that modern technology has made people's lives more complicated, while others think it has made life easier.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

You must therefore:
- Explain why technology may make life more complicated.

- Make your own opinion clear.
Do not simply write an essay about whether technology is good or bad.
The key word is complicated. Your ideas should relate directly to whether modern technology simplifies or increases the difficulty of everyday life.
How to analyse the question

High-scoring sample answer
Modern technology has transformed almost every aspect of daily life, from the way people communicate to how they work, shop and manage money. While some argue that these developments have introduced unnecessary complexity, I believe technology has made life considerably easier overall, despite creating certain new challenges.
One reason technology can make life more complicated is that people are now expected to manage an increasing number of digital systems. Online accounts require passwords and security checks, software must be regularly updated, and technical problems can suddenly prevent people from completing simple tasks. Furthermore, smartphones have made individuals permanently reachable, which can blur the boundary between work and private life. For example, employees may continue receiving messages and emails long after the working day has ended, making it harder for them to switch off completely. Technology can therefore create new forms of stress even while solving older problems.
However, the advantages of modern technology are more significant in my view because it has made countless everyday activities faster and more convenient. People can now communicate instantly with friends, relatives and colleagues anywhere in the world, while services such as online banking, shopping and navigation reduce the time required for routine tasks. A person who once had to visit a bank, travel agency or ticket office can now complete the same task within minutes using a smartphone. Technology has also improved access to information, allowing people to learn new skills or solve practical problems without relying entirely on specialists.
In my opinion, these benefits outweigh the additional complexity technology sometimes creates. Most of the difficulties associated with digital systems can be reduced as people become familiar with them, whereas the time savings and greater access to information have a lasting impact on everyday life.
In conclusion, although modern technology can introduce problems such as digital stress, security concerns and technical difficulties, it has generally simplified daily life. Its ability to improve communication, save time and provide instant access to services makes it more beneficial than burdensome for most people.

Weak:
