Introduction IELTS Speaking Part 2 Topics & Cue Cards
IELTS Speaking Part 2 is often considered the most challenging part of the speaking test. You are given a cue card and asked to speak for up to two minutes on a specific topic, such as a person, place, experience, or object.
A lot of candidates struggle because they are not sure how to organise their ideas or continue speaking for long enough. As a result, they often give short or unclear answers and remain at Band 6 or 6.5.

What Happens in IELTS Speaking Part 2?
In Part 2 of the IELTS Speaking test:
- You receive a cue card with a topic
- You have 1 minute to prepare
- You speak for 1 to 2 minutes
- The examiner may ask a follow-up question
The topics are usually based on everyday experiences and are repeated regularly in real exams.
Common IELTS Speaking Part 2 Topics
Part 2 topics generally fall into a few main categories:
For example, you might be asked to describe a memorable trip, a useful object, or a person who inspires you.
To improve your score, it is important to practise each type of topic and learn how to organise your answer clearly.
How to Answer Part 2 Questions at Band 7–8
To reach Band 7 or higher, your answer should:
1. Follow a clear structure
Introduce the topic, develop your ideas, and give a clear ending.
2. Speak continuously
Avoid long pauses. Try to keep speaking naturally.
3. Use simple but effective vocabulary
You do not need advanced words, but you should avoid very basic language.
4. Add personal details
Your answer should sound real and personal, not memorised.
Example Structure You Can Use
A simple structure for almost any Part 2 topic:
- Introduce what you are describing
- Give some background details
- Describe your experience
- Explain why it is important or memorable
This structure works for most topics and helps you stay organised.
