IELTS Speaking Part 1: Food Topic Overview
In Part 1, the examiner wants to see how naturally you can talk about everyday topics.
With food questions, they are testing:
- Fluency (how smoothly you speak)
- Vocabulary (how you describe preferences)
- Ability to explain simple ideas
Key tips for this topic:
- Give reasons for your preferences
- Add one example
- Avoid one-word answers
Most Common IELTS Food Questions
Here are the most frequently asked questions about food:
- What kind of food do you like?
- Do you prefer eating at home or eating out?
- Is there any food you dislike?
- Do you often cook?
- What food is popular in your country?
- Do you think your diet is healthy?
- Have your eating habits changed over time?
These questions may be phrased differently, but the core ideas stay the same.
Band 7–8 Sample Answers (With Explanation)
Question 1: What kind of food do you like?
Sample Answer:
I really enjoy eating Asian food, especially dishes that are quite spicy. I think it’s because the flavours are much stronger and more interesting compared to other types of cuisine.
Why this is Band 7+:
- Gives a clear preference
- Adds a reason
- Uses topic vocabulary (“spicy”, “flavours”)
Question 2: Do you prefer eating at home or eating out?
Sample Answer:
I usually prefer eating at home because it’s healthier and more affordable. However, I do enjoy eating out occasionally, especially when I meet friends.
Why this works:
- Balanced answer
- Uses contrast (“however”)
- Sounds natural
Question 3: Is there any food you dislike?
Sample Answer:
Yes, I don’t really like very oily food because it makes me feel uncomfortable after eating it. I generally prefer lighter meals instead.
Why this works:
- Clear opinion
- Gives reason
- Adds contrast
Question 4: Do you often cook?
Sample Answer:
Not very often, to be honest. I usually cook simple meals during the week, but at weekends I prefer eating out or ordering food.
Why this works:
- Natural tone
- Adds personal context
- Uses time reference
Question 5: What food is popular in your country?
Sample Answer:
In my country, traditional dishes are still very popular, especially meals that include rice or noodles. Street food is also quite common, particularly in busy cities.
Why this works:
- Gives general answer
- Adds example
- Uses topic vocabulary
How to Extend Your Answers (Band 7 Strategy)
Many candidates stay at Band 6 because they give answers that are too short.
Weak answer:
“I like fast food.”
Better answer:
“I like fast food because it’s quick and convenient, especially when I’m busy. For example, I often eat it after work.”
Simple Structure to Follow
Opinion → Reason → Example
You only need to extend slightly — not speak for a long time.
Useful Food Vocabulary for IELTS
Focus on accurate vocabulary, not “advanced” vocabulary.
Common Mistakes (Band 6 Problems)
1. Very short answers
Always give at least 2 sentences
2. Repeating basic words
Avoid “very nice”, “very good”
3. No explanation
Always say “because…”
4. Speaking unnaturally
Keep your tone relaxed and natural
