IELTS Speaking Part 1: Work & Study Overview
In Part 1, the examiner wants to see how naturally you can talk about your daily life.
Work and study questions test:
- Fluency (how smoothly you speak)
- Ability to explain routines and preferences

Question: What do you do for work?
Sample Answer:

Sample Answer:

Question: What do you study?
Sample Answer:
I’m currently studying business management at university. It covers a wide range of topics, including marketing, finance, and leadership.
Question: Why did you choose this subject?
Sample Answer:
I chose this subject because I’m interested in how businesses operate, and I think it will give me more career opportunities in the future.
Question: Do you enjoy your studies?
Sample Answer:
Yes, I do, although some parts are quite challenging. Overall, I find it interesting, especially when we work on practical projects.
How to Extend Your Answers (Band 7 Technique)
Many candidates give answers that are too short.
Weak answer:
“I study business.”
Better answer:
“I study business because I’m interested in how companies grow and develop. For example, I recently learned about marketing strategies.”
Simple Structure to Follow
Answer → Reason → Example
This is enough to reach Band 7 for fluency.

Common Mistakes (Band 6 Problems)
1. Very short answers
Always extend slightly
2. Memorised answers
Speak naturally
3. No explanation
Always include “because”
4. Overusing simple vocabulary
