IELTS Speaking Part 1: Lifestyle Topic Overview
In Part 1, the examiner wants to see how naturally you can talk about everyday life.
Lifestyle questions are used to assess:
- Your ability to describe habits and routines
- Your fluency when explaining general behaviour
- Your vocabulary related to health, time, and daily life
Key Strategy
Do NOT speak in general terms only.
Always give:
- A clear answer
- A reason
- A simple example
Most Common IELTS Lifestyle Questions
Here are the most frequently asked questions:
- Do you think you have a healthy lifestyle?
- What do you usually do in your free time?
- Do you prefer a busy lifestyle or a relaxed one?
- How has your lifestyle changed over time?
- Do people in your country live a healthy lifestyle?
- What activities do you do to stay healthy?
- Is it important to have a balanced lifestyle?
These questions may appear in slightly different forms, but the core ideas are similar.
Band 7–8 Sample Answers (With Explanation)
Question 1: Do you think you have a healthy lifestyle?
Sample Answer:
I would say my lifestyle is fairly healthy, although there is definitely room for improvement. I try to eat balanced meals and exercise regularly, but sometimes I don’t get enough sleep due to work.
Why this is Band 7+:
- Balanced answer
- Uses contrast (“although”)
- Includes realistic detail
Question 2: What do you usually do in your free time?
Sample Answer:
In my free time, I usually try to relax by watching films or going for a walk. I also enjoy spending time with friends, especially at weekends.
Why this works:
- Clear structure
- Gives multiple activities
- Natural tone
Question 3: Do you prefer a busy lifestyle or a relaxed one?
Sample Answer:
I generally prefer a balanced lifestyle, where I stay productive during the day but still have time to relax. I think having both is important for maintaining good mental health.
Why this works:
- Avoids simple “A or B” answer
- Shows reasoning
- Uses relevant vocabulary
Question 4: How has your lifestyle changed over time?
Sample Answer:
My lifestyle has changed quite a lot over the years. When I was younger, I had more free time, but now I have more responsibilities, so my daily routine is much busier.
Why this works:
- Uses comparison (past vs present)
- Clear explanation
- Logical structure
Question 5: Do people in your country live a healthy lifestyle?
Sample Answer:
It depends on the individual, but generally speaking, many people are becoming more health-conscious. However, there are still some unhealthy habits, such as eating fast food regularly.
Why this works:
- Balanced view
- Uses topic vocabulary
- Adds contrast
How to Extend Your Answers (Band 7 Technique)
Many candidates give answers that are too short.
Weak answer:
“Yes, I have a healthy lifestyle.”
Band 7+ answer:
“Yes, I think I have a relatively healthy lifestyle because I try to eat balanced meals and exercise regularly. For example, I usually go for a walk in the evening.”
Simple Formula
Answer → Reason → Example
This works for almost every Part 1 question.
Useful Vocabulary for Lifestyle Topic
